What’s Your Skin Issue? There’s a Treatment for That
When it comes to professional skin care, it’s great to have options. But sometimes knowing which procedure to have can be confusing. It can be difficult to know whether you should have a chemical peel, microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing when you’re struggling with certain skin issues such as acne, sun damage or rosacea.
If you have one or more of those skin problems, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing the right tool for the right condition. Here’s some basic guidance:
Do you have oily skin and/or acne?
In most cases, microdermabrasion is best solution for these problems. That’s because:
- The exfoliating tip can clean off dead skin cells
- The vacuum-like suction helps clean out pores and oil plugs
- It can help temporarily reduce oil
(If you have very inflamed or cystic acne, check with your doctor before having microdermabrasion.)
Do you have sun damage?
In most cases, laser treatments (such as fractional skin rejuvenation) are best for improving the effects of sun damage. Sun can cause everything from small, brown spots on your skin to fine lines and wrinkles. Severe sun damage can cause your skin to look blotchy and even leathery.
If you’re under age 40 and don’t have much sun damage, a series of light chemical peels (glycolic or beta hydroxyl) or microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of your skin. IPL/photorejuvenation treatments can also give you more even skin tone by removing brown spots, small red veins and blotches. IPL can also stimulate collagen production to further rejuvenate your skin.
Do you have red veins with flushing across your cheeks?
These symptoms could indicate you have a skin condition called rosacea, which should be diagnosed by your doctor. There are many topical and oral prescriptions that can help get it under control, usually in a couple of months. Once your rosacea is being managed, IPL treatments can help reduce redness and flushing and get rid of some veins.
